Best Window Dressing for Privacy?

If anyone has any brilliant idea, that would be so helpful!

My new living room/ diner is a long (and narrow) room with windows on both sides, one side looking into a fairly busy street. It means that you can see straight through from outside.

One solution would be wooden blinds, which I like but they would make the room too dark Plantation blinds are too dark too, and unfortunately too e

What about those films you can stick on? That makes windows opaque but let's plenty of light in. Otherwise, do you have any kind of front garden? If you have any space at the front, maybe some tall plants/bushes would hide your window?

How about lace, gauze or organza? Anything that's near the glass will do the trick and you can create some lovely effects with sheer and semi-transparent fabrics.

Was going to say a friend has those opaque stickers, she has three as squares down the window so it doesn't totally cover the window but gives a lot of privacy and doesn't block out the light.

Opaque stickers and a couple of bamboos outside. Actually I heard the other day that if u make your garden really pretty then people will automatically glance at that when walking past and not in to your house!

There are some lovely muslin style or organza panels around. I quite like muslin and looks nice. Or get a roller blind in a sheer type of fabric. It's neat and serves same purpose as a net but isn't frilly iyswim.

There are lots of solutions. A white Venetian blind wouldn't darken the room.

I vote venetian blind too in white or a light reflective colour. you can tip it slightly so that you can still see out and get plenty of light but that others can't see in.

You also get these roller blinds that have panels in them that you can adjust so that you get light through or shut off which may be an idea but I have no experience of them:

I second the stickers - we have them on our front windows. With your OH I'm afraid, hate net curtains!

We had the stickers on our sash windows in our previous home, and it was Victorian so looked great. Our new home is 70s so we knew it wouldn't suit. Ended up getting these and they are slightly shiny so the light really reflects off them. They are on a south facing window in a long room that needs to get light down to the other end and they look fab. The sheen on them makes them very easy to clean too.

I don't like nets either, but I currently have ?voile? Ikea sheer curtains. They don't cut out very much light at all, but they do provide privacy.

One of my windows facing road has vertical blinds, which are easier to clean than venetians, and other-livingroom- window I've fixed a couple of glass shelves to display plants. I like the effect, although plants do block some light, and get lots of compliments.

I had white voile in my last house (front door opened straight onto street/into living room) and that allowed privacy without looking dated. Just had it flat/straight on a rod, no gathers, ruffles etc. it was cut to measure at dunelm and the whole thing including rod and hooks was around £10 iirc. I had two, one to wash and one up, though the cats were constantly making it grubby

We got our window film from wilko for about £3.

I have a Victorian terrace on a busy street in London and am constantly looking for good window treatments. At the moment I have nets up (which look awful) but the cats ruin them so I thought it's worth keeping them up. I am debating shutters but have heard they are really expensive. This site has some great options such as double curtains (the blue room at the bottom of page) or transparent blinds (the second image)

Privacy roller blinds in either a screen or muslin fabric work perfectly, alternatively a duette blind in a light colour also looks nice.
If you dont like the look of net or lace curtains a soft linen may suit.

Wooden shutters look great but can also look a little cold, if you are double glazed you can have mdf which are available in white painted finishes only, supply and fit prices are approx £250 per sq/m. Solid wood stained or painted in many more finishes will be more towards £350 per sq/m
