pinterest inspired, white gutters instead of bookshelves?

has anyone tried these yet?

dd had a tiny boxroom and even the smallest Billy bookshelf takes up valuable floor space. added to that she tends to trash it most days and I wonder if it might be wise to store the books on the wall?

do the gutters do a good job?

What exactly do you mean by gutters? I thought they were on the outside of a house to catch the rain.

meglet · 14/06/2015 16:18

fixing a short length of square gutter (say 1m) along the wall and using it as a ledge for books.

We were in wickes yesterday and I got quite excited when I saw the square gutters. I'd pinned the idea to my pinterest wall months ago.

I saw something like this outside a cafe the other day. Only underneath each length of guttering was a wood shelf. The gutters were full of compost and plants. It looked really pretty.

So I'm not sure how much weight each gutter would hold. You may need to put the brackets about every 30cm apart.

here you go. (first pic I've posted on here, hope it works)

snow I've been pondering the weight issue too. DS has far more space than DD, so his bookshelves can take all the meaty reference books, I doubt the gutters would hold all of them.

ikea spice racks work too!

longlistofexlovers · 14/06/2015 20:35

I like the spice racks much more than the gutters! The gutters look very obviously like gutters, whereas the spice racks look like cool shelves.

BuildYourOwnSnowman · 14/06/2015 20:41

i was going to do this but then realised it didn't hold enough books. As the dc have grown up and moved onto more standard book sizes this has become more of a problem and i'm glad i went for proper shelves.

stargirl1701 · 14/06/2015 20:43

We have the spice racks here. IKEA now do picture rails which would also work.

Shapebandit · 14/06/2015 20:54

I've got ikea spice racks in ds room. They work perfectly

TheAuthoress · 14/06/2015 21:03

Ikea spice racks here too :)

FirstOfficerDouglasRichardson · 15/06/2015 07:34

They just don't hold enough books. DS has one beside his bed for a few night time books but still needs a bookcase to house the rest.

Qwebec · 19/06/2015 02:28

Could the bookcase just outside her room? We had bookcases in the hall the kitchen and the living room. She could use the rack for the books she is using atm and the othersgo elsewere

kickassangel · 19/06/2015 02:34

Shelves that are suspended from the walls at waist height and up (for an adult)?

BoobyNooby · 19/07/2015 23:13

Use ikea ribba picture ledges....

nikki1978 · 19/07/2015 23:18

Get a raised bed with book shelves underneath? Like a cabin bed. Those ideas look nice but don't seem very practical if your child likes a good choice of books.

BoutrosBoutros · 20/07/2015 13:06

What about books above the door too? Quite a few ideas on using that 'dead' space on Pinterest.
