Windows - what's 'tasteful'?

I have small hexagonal bay windows and wondered if it's bad taste to dress the upstairs and downstairs differently?

They drop to about waist level so think floor curtains may be too heavy but windowsill curtains might be too twee. I'm all for Roman or Venetian blinds but I do need blackout-ability for upstairs bedroom and I think windows are not grand enough to handle two layers of dressing (not sure that's even the right word for them) so thought curtains best bet upstairs but still not sure how long to have them.

What's a good look do you think?

Where are you radiators in the rooms in question? If you put up curtains which hang over the radiators then the heat will go up behind the curtains rather than into the room.

In our living room bay the curtains end at the deep window sills. In the bedroom above they end above the radiator (no sills).

From the outside it doesn't really matter, you can have curtains, or blinds.

If you want blackout curtains, I'd get a pair of pencil pleat curtains and a detachable blackout lining because you can't wash or dry clean it, it'll ruin the machines and the lining.

Don't go below the radiator as it'll block the heat, other than that it really is personal preference.

Short curtains are a very dated look. I would always go for floor length curtains with roman blinds to "dress" the windows properly.
