Nice laminate flooring

We need to replace the flooring in pretty much all of our new house. Would love to go for real wood but can't afford it. Does anyone have any recommendations for any particular brands or types of laminate which look as much like real wood as possible without breaking the bank? I'm keen to go for a natural planky oak type look with a reasonable amount of colour variation in it, as we have wood beams/furniture/skirting boards which are all a bit different in colour.
Thanks!

I would highly recommend quick step. We got the one with 4 edges almost 9 years ago and it still looks fab.

Oh and another(possibly dim) question - sorry! What do you do with a half flight of stairs between two hard - floored areas? The stairs and the upper floor are currently carpeted but the carpet is grim and we are putting laminate on the upper floor.

It would surely look a bit odd to have a little carpeted stairway in between two hard floors, but what's the alternative?
