Their Flaxa storage bed would suit my DC perfectly but I irrationally hate its black drawers. Wondered if they would be paintable? I'm not blessed with DIY skills...

How about covering them with a wallpaper/wrapping paper/comic pages that suit what they are in to and varnishing over?

That's a really interesting idea, thank you! Do you mean, glueing whatever we would choose directly onto the drawers and then clear varnishing?

There is a whole website devoted to pimping your IKEA furniture called ikea hacks or something similar.

I looked into this a while ago and the main advice on painting IKEA furniture is to use spray/ aerosol paints. You can use a white one which you use for blocking out stains on walls before painting and then spray over with coloured stuff. Plasiticote is the one in the UK.

You can paint anything with Annie Sloan Chalk Paint. You don't have to distress it and do the whole shabby chic thing. You can just leave it matt and chalky. With a couple of coats of wax it's reasonably hard wearing.

I painted one of the old expedit bookcases for my DS's room. It was fine but had to do a bit of sanding first then just used a normal Dulux wood satin paint. Sanding it helps the paint to stick, says DP!
