Unsealed walls?

When we bought our 4 bed house it was 15 years old. The previous owners had decorated all but one room, which they used as a store room for their jet skis.

We used it as DD's bedroom, and we painted the ceiling and three walls white, with the fourth wall a sunny yellow.

After a couple of years, there was spotting on the ceiling and top of the white walls. We thought it was damp and had the roof tiles checked, but couldn't find a problem.

Someone suggested the problem was that we had painted onto bare plaster, and the walls and ceiling should have been "sealed" first. However, as we had painted, it was too late to "seal" them.

We repainted the white walls and ceiling white, but, two years on, the spots are coming through again. They look awful, a sort of yellowy brown colour.

Before we paint over them again, does anyone have any other suggestions. The yellow feature wall has no spots.

Not sure of the cause, could be due to the fact it wasn't sealed....however you can buy a spray on product which covers stains in b and q. You spray it then just paint over. It works quite well.

Or there's a dealer/primer/undercoat you can buy called Zinsser, which does the job well. They do little spray cans or 1l, 2.5l or 5l tins of paint.

Can I spray or paint the sealer on top of the to previous coats of white paint? And then give it its third coat of white?

It's a north facing room, which is why we went for the white and sunny yellow combination. I like the colours, and I think that e.g. a second wall in yellow would be a bit much, but the white looks awful with the spotting.

Yes I think so.

Yes. The Zinsser stuff goes over anything! Good luck.
