help! decorating and light fittings

I am about to paint a ceiling. Dh is at work so not here to advise lash it up a bit more

I have one of those chrome effect light shades that is fitted flush to the ceiling. Have just tried unscrewing it a bit bit it isn't dropping down so I've screwed it back again.

How do I avoid getting paint on it ? Or rather will the paint wash off with something?

We have a few paint smeared fittings. I'd rather not add this to the collection!

cover it with some cling film?

i would use painter tape to protect the edges, and wipe it clean as soon as possible if paint got on it.
