Wall units in open plan kitchen diner with high ceilings - opinions pls!

Hi, am trying to figure out the layout for our kitchen. Our ceilings are about 3m high but me and DH are only 5ft 4 and 5 ft 5. Our current kitchen has large wall units about 1 m high which leaves about a 30cm gap to the ceiling. We only use the bottom 2 shelves of these units, the stuff on the top shelves is just collecting dust.

The kitchen is the first thing you see when you walk into the kitchen diner and I want it to look fucking amazing.

I want a smaller display shelf above my bottom kitchen units but can't decide whether to have no wall units at all or just put a small wall unit up either side of the hob, seems like if we make the units too small they will look lost. But I suspect we'll want the wall units to hide mugs, tea, jam etc. I do like to have plenty of everything in my kitchen... Hate running out!

Any thoughts?? Need to shower but will check back in a wee while!

Tall 900 wall units with a further small glazed cabinet on the top looks fab with New England /shaker style cabinetry - could you consider something like that ?

I haven't wall units at all and I think it really makes the kitchen look much bigger and contemporary. we have a wall of floor to ceiling units (with built in oven / fridge freezer and a tall larder type cupboard) but then the other wall is just base units.

Mandy that's what I want. Do you have other storage eg a pantry or cellar which you have to use as overspillL? Were you ruthless about clearing out yr kitchen cupboards before you designed the kitchen?

We probably ended up with a similar amount of cupboard space. I have 3 floor to ceiling units (so 180cm) - 1 larder cupboard, 1 with f/f and 1 with built in double oven. There are cupboards on top of each so something a little bit like this (imagine the ovens here are slightly higher so my cupboards are slightly smaller). I also have an island unit (which I didn't have before) which is 2 x 60cm deep pan drawer units which is where all my crockery / cutlery & cooking spoons etc / glasses / tea & coffee making bits go.
