Do you put anything above picture rails?

I'm wandering if I can use the white space above doors and picture rails, in hallway and landing, tohang photos, prints etc. Or is it just not the done thing?

I have limited useable wall space but potentially a lot of photos and pictures I would like to display.

Think I will try it anyway, but looking for opinions.
