Runner on stairs only?

I m thinking of putting a quirky tess runner on two sets,of stairs, but not on the landing as a) I can't afford it and b) carpeter advises landing runner would be unsafe and to have either nothing or wall to wall carpet. It's quite patterned though and we have a checked bathroom floor it would meet which would be a bit manic!

The landing would be painted grey on the floors- as the bedrooms are now. We don't have carpet anywhere but the cat hair on the stairs is obvious each day and driving me insane!

Would the runner being the only carpet in the house be weird? I could just paint stairs grey as well but dd has already fallen down them once, figure a runner is safer as well as bringing some colour to the hallway (stairs face door)

I think it would look odd with nothing on the landing floor. Could you take one neutral colour from the runner and carpet the landing in that colour in a plain carpet? That way you have continuity of carpet but the runner still stands out.
