Mattress topper any good?

So I've ordered a new mattress and Id like to make it last as long as possible and also as comfy as possible, without being too hot. I fancy a feather topper as memory foam seems to be too hot for a lot of people, but... I'm mega skint at the mo and want something cheap. Does anyone know if mattress topper is worth it? And also am I just as well being a single feather duvet and sticking it under my sheet on double bed instead of topper?

We've just got a new mattress. Can't believe we slept on the last one for so long, it was terrible.

I bought a topper/protector from Aldi. It seems fine and was cheap. Contains polyester wadding. I've also bought a Fogarty one so we have a change. I'm not sure toppers make your mattress last longer other than protecting they from sweat, etc. You need to turn your mattress if the manufacturer recommends it to ensure even wear. I wrestled with ours tonight as it's heavy.

I'm not sure using a duvet as a mattress would be very comfortable.

Just re-read my post - typos galore! Protecting them and using a duvet as a mattress topper were what I meant to type.

We got a cheap one from argos for our sofa bed and it transformed it.
You can actually sleep on it now and everything.

The cheap one from argos, how much was it? And was it feather, foam or hollowfibre
?

We got a double topper from dunelm for £99 to go on a very firm old mattress on our spare bed - it is wonderful. So comfy that I'd rather sleep in the spare bed than in our £££ feather and black bed we treated ourselves to a couple of years ago
