Hall lampshades - are they all awful?

I'm looking for two lampshades for my downstairs hall and two for my upstairs landing. I'm stuck with a horrible (darkish) blue carpet and have cream walls.

At the moment I have bare bulbs hanging down but I am determined that they WILL be covered this week.

I've trawled through Next, Ikea, B&Q and the only thing I can see working is a plain cream fabric style lampshade.

My only other idea is duckegg blue? Does anyone have any ideas or would the plain cream be ok?

Well, mine were plain cream fabric ones and they looked ok. If you're looking for wow, these will not fit the bill. And I'm not the right person to advise on wow items

I later updated the plain cream fabric ones with cream fabric ones with a flower pattern cutout from dunelm, most of their range seemed to be lots cheaper than b and q for exactly the same thing

It was more important for us to retain energy efficiency, which is why we haven't gone for anything wow, pretty or chandelier-like!

Thanks for replying. I don't think my blue carpet is ever going to earn the hall the wow factor but I'm concerned plain cream fabric lampshades will make it look like an old outdated hotel.

I'm embarrassed to admit I have lived with naked bulbs for THREE years due to my indecisiveness but I am now determined something has to look better than nothing!

I'm starting to think there isn't such a thing as a pretty lampshade :(

My head is frazzled from looking at hundred of lampshades this evening!

Duck egg blue might look good, or you could try somewhere like Habitat for something a bit different - they have some white shades with silver lining which look fab on the website.

I have these in my cream walled hallway and they look great.

I'm not sure duck egg would work with blue carpets. I would be more inclined to go for a very light gold. Light in design too. Or... Glass stars are very pretty.:)

How about a total contrast? Either teal or fuchsia pink?

Does it have to be a plain fabric? Wouldn't you consider a wooden material or glass etc?

They usually cast lovely shadows so might jazz up your walls too

How about a light fitting? Glass perhaps?
