We have bought a house and are going to recarpet throughout due to the interesting pub carpet decor.

We've never bought carpet before, what do we look for? What is good and what isn't? Some is cheap so I'm guessing the more expensive the better? We've also got two DC so it needs to last.

Is local better than the big stores? How much should we budget?

Where do we start? Any help would be appreciated.

We need all new carpets and I was pretty clueless so have had to look into it.

I've been told wool 80/20 mix is the best quality and most hardwearing, the heavier the better.

Polypropylene carpets are good if you have kids as they're supposedly stain resistant and you can use bleach on them. I looked and some of these were hard to tell apart from the wool carpets.

Berbers are a looped carpet and maybe best avoided if you have cats or dogs as they can click.

Cirrus Cloud 9mm underlay is good and can be bought much cheaper from ebay than the main carpet stores. Local carpet stores are usually cheaper, the likes of Storeys add on a fortune for the underlay, grippers etc. There are a couple of online flooring places that are cheaper and you can order samples. I think Flooring Superstore was one I looked at.

Hope this helps.
