Help me revamp my kitchen

DP and I are moving back into a property we have owned together for a few years but have been renting it out for the last 2 years. We did live in it prior to that. I've always hated the kitchen (it is fairly new but MIL chose it and it's not my cup of tea).
The cupboards are oak. The worktops are black. The wall tiles are black and white and the floor tiles are cream and a brownish colour (I know, nothing matches).
I was thinking of either changing the floor tiles to black flooring of some kind and going with a bit of a black theme with grey walls. Or maybe putting up cream wall tiles and having painting the walls grey and having a grey a yellow theme.
Help me oh wise ones.

Just as a personal thing, I seriously can't stand black furnishings and black kitchens to me are very dreary and unwelcoming.

So, for me, I'd say if you can change the wall tiles to something less stark than black and white, YES!

I'd go with the cream colour, and probably paint the walls deep clotted cream.
