Need a new kitchen but don't know where to start

Our kitchen is very old and very horrible. We can't afford to replace it so thought we would do it bit by bit, at least make a start.

So first our ceiling is cracked, wires hanging down, not earthed and chimney breast crumbling.

So first job, we need the wiring to be earthed, a new ceiling put up, new lights and our chimney breast re-bricked.

So who do we call first? Have no idea? An electrician?

Kitchen appliances work and it's usuable for now.

Where the hell do I start?

with a list - write down everything that's wrong that need addressing - then look logically and put the list into an order - ie electrics fixed before re plastering - then also see if you can add to or improve the units you have - either with a lick of paint - or rip out and replace with freestanding pieces or eBay finds etc - there's plenty of places to get inspiration on the web - multiple freestanding pieces can be linked together with the same paint colours etc ! Always make sure you have space to put heavy and hot things down near your cooker - allow gaps between hobs and tall sides etc. ...

I would contact a general builder and talk him through what you need to achieve and he can organize the different trades for you.
