I am scared of colour!

I have quite a large living room (i have a dining room which i am planning on using as an extra bedroom so also have the dining table in here).it has large patio doors on one saide facing the garden and smaller windows on each side,on the other wall is the door to the hall/kitchen etc.

It is cream,im happy-ish with this colour as there is that awful textured wallpaper on the walls and i dont think colour would look good on it,it would be more noticeable i think?

We have 2 black leather sofas which we are getting rid of,once they are gone it will be a cream room with a wooden table na dchairs and a wooden desk....

I would love to put some colour in the room,but have no idea where to start,i am bored of creams,browns,beige etc.I have 5 children under 7 and 2 cats so i dont have bits and bobs around (you know how some people have loads of twigs and pebbly shit on table)else they get knocked over.

Accent colours? Throws, cushions, vases and even blinds/curtains in another colour. Most colours go with cream. My lounge also is a bit too beige, brown and I am contemplating what to do with it. Teal? Duck egg? Green?

5 under 7? You're right... Definitely no pebbly shit! Our dining room is cream and green: very relaxing, light, and good transition to the garden. You could get away with any accent colour, by the sounds of things, but I'd start with something non-confrontational (muted blue, green or yellow). If you're afraid of colour, do it in an easily reversible way: pick two or three of cushions, rugs, curtains, blinds, pictures, lampshades, and choose shades that are similar, work together, but aren't identical - have a look at the families of colours in dulux's mixed-to-order range: they tend to have the same name, but numbered according to intensity (eg:Golden umber 3 vs Golden umber 1). Or go for the same colour in a couple of different textures (eg: wooly and silky).

A big purple couch is what you need

I was very similar to you - most of the rooms in my house are beige / grey / cream. We had a wall knocked down at the back of the house to make large kitchen diner and went online to order a new sofa. Found a beige sofa to replace the old beige sofa (such was my reluctance to be adventurous with colour!). It was a "deal" weekend and when I went to order, the beige was out of stock. All they had left was the same sofa in green . My H said, just order the green. Honestly my heart was pounding as I clicked on "confirm order". Then it arrived and it was green. Green!! We then chose a wallpaper for one wall (I know, I'll get flamed for even suggesting a feature wall ) which is just white and green. Everything else is minimalist (white kitchen, white walls, wooden floor) and wait for it......... I absolutely love the green. I think you just have to bite the bullet and go for it. Good luck!

Yes i was thinking of a purple or red sofa!

Am going to look at sofa now,will probably get second had (or have been looking at ikea ektorp which have washable covers and arent too pricey,and they do a red one)then move onto cushions and rugs :-)

Yes, I got mine previous beige one from Ebay when a local superstore closed down. Lots of online retailers have offer weekends etc.
