Striped carpets

Decorator is doing the hall, stairs and landing next month then we can finally get round to the new carpet.
I quite fancy a striped carpet but wondering if it would date easily? We are having plain cream walls so though a bolder carpet would look good.

The hall is tiled so carpet would be up the stairs and on the galleried landing upstairs.

Hi. I'm also interested in this. Have you seen any nice ones?

Misty9 · 25/08/2014 19:49

We love our striped carpet and visitors always comment on it. The British heart foundation collection guys even remembered our house because of it! I can attempt to remember the name if you like, it was 80/20 wool I know that much :)

LinaDee · 25/08/2014 20:01

I love striped carpets on stairs!!!

I don't imagine it would date quickly if you're choosing neutral colours.

Chillisauce · 25/08/2014 20:04

Check out the alternative flooring company, they have some great ones. Little bit pricey but I've been looking on their website for inspiration. I really want a striped stair carpet.

We would be looking at Neutral colours, creams, sand, brown etc.

Glad you all love yours. DH has taken some convincing so will show him this thread :)

Do you think wider or thinner stripes would be best?

We've got thin stripes and I think it makes our hallway look longer, so it depends to where you want the eye drawn i think. The carpet fitters moaned about striped carpet for the stairs though Grin
Ours is orangey sand colours and although it was quite striking on first view, I think it works well with our sandstone coloured walls and is a bit of interest for an otherwise bland area.

We've just fitted stripey carpet to the stairs - I love it. It's grey/pale grey and I've had so many positive comments. Don't care if it dates much

minkah · 27/08/2014 10:01

Striped carpet won't date. Striped bed linen doesn't date. Striped wallpaper doesn't date. Pinstripe suits don't date! And nor do striped deck chairs.

BucktoothedGirlinLuxembourg · 27/08/2014 10:02

Brintons do nice striped carpets. Subtle pinstripes or more in your face designs.

Missunreasonable · 27/08/2014 10:03

I have neutral coloured striped carpet on my stairs and landing area. The stripes are beige, brown and cream colours. We had it out down 4 years ago and it hasn't dated and I don't expect it will date any time soon. I would get another striped carpet if it needed replacing.

BucktoothedGirlinLuxembourg · 27/08/2014 10:07

I do think the more obvious striped stuff has had its day (as in it's not the cutting edge of design anymore), but I still like the finer, less obvious pinstripes.

Chewbecca · 27/08/2014 19:24

We've got this one in our hall, stairs & landing, put it down around 5 years ago. I am not sure if it has dated or not!

I do know I still like it, it looks warm and welcoming and it is very forgiving with footprints, tea spills etc.

Twrch62 · 28/08/2014 15:31

I have found the demand for striped carpet has tailed off over the last 18 months.
Also bear in mind with a striped carpet the pile will distort over time and the stripes will go wavy, less so with a loop/berber pile.

msfreud · 28/08/2014 16:39

I love the ones by Crucial Trading. Have just ordered a bunch of samples to decide on a colour for my stairs and landing.

WowWowSauce · 31/08/2014 09:21

I think it depends on the colours, I've looked at a few flats where the striped wallpaper was too bold and badly placed, and it did put me off buying them. But if the stripes aren't too wild I think it would be lovely and classic.

minkah · 31/08/2014 23:42

Anything too bold and badly placed is off putting, I agree with wowwowsauce.

I've seen tons of floral wallpapers that fall under that description.
