Front Door / Garden Gate colour

Can anyone recommend a lovely front door colour? Have tried a sea green, cream but nothing seems to look right. The front door is along the side of the house in a passageway, and the front of the garden gate is at a 90 degree angle to it, so it's quite dark- the sea green looks lovely on the other side of the garden fence where it's sunny, but it's too cold in the non sunny side.

Dh suggested a noddy yellow but I'm not keen! After something pretty that works well in the dark as the passageway doesn't get any direct sunshine. White would be too stark I think. I need to collect some testers from b&q this afternoon so any thoughts appreciated!

if it is white or pale, you will have to wash it quite often. A soft handbrush and a bucket of warm water with WUL will do. Don't rub it when dry as you will dull the paint.

Ours was a bright royal blue, which works well in a dark north facing porch.

I said was it needs repainting/replacing, it's very scruffy.

What era/style is your house?

Ours is a pale green called Chartwell

Old door was a darkish blue & that showed dust worse than a lighter colour

I suddenly thought this afternoon that actually, (running with dh's theme of bold & bright) that pillar box red might work quite well on the small gate to the side of the house, the front door (which is already a strange, almost dried blood red. Actually pretty horrible, thinking about it) and the garden gate. However, there weren't any testers so have got a pot of red exterior gloss sitting in front of me with the receipt taped to the top as I mull it over and veer between thinking it'll look lovely to thinking it'll look god awful. Mine is black, admittedly not bright or sunny but very classic

What colour is your brick work?

Might be a bit too much red? (Although I do love a pillar box red front door...)

How about a soft warm grey?

I love those sagey shades but they aren't for every door. They look awful with red brick (IMO).

The undercoat he had on before that was sort of battleship grey & that looked ok too (though matt finish, obv)

black is OK undercover, but not durable if exposed to sun. It will overheat, causing cracking, and even blistering and bubbling.

10 Downing Street has, I understand, three front doors, of which two are spares, and every few months they take one off, and replace it with another which is freshly painted.

Wow! How do you know that piglet john? That's a great fact! I was hoping to paint the gates and the front door the same colour so not sure that black or slate grey would work. We have cream roses around the front of the house hence trying to colour match the gate to that, but as you can see it failed miserably

We have F&B Railings - a kind of bluey/black/grey which is nice with our red brick porch.

We have Rectory red by Farrow and Ball and it is lovely, it is mattw which looks really nice and we have the same on the inside of the door.

Try F&B Licheon, looks fab on our Victorian door & gates.

Dark blue is the safest bet or a tasteful yellow or purple as a wildcard.
