Painting an Ikea Mydal bunk bed - what to use?

Wonder if anyone can help. Dh reckons a one coat gloss but I'm sure it won't be durable enough. Amy ideas?

It looks similar wood wise to my "IVAR cabinets turned into kitchen cabinets".

I did three thin coats of not too shiny gloss paint on their doors to "kitchenify" them. No sealer or transparent top coat. Been a few years now and they've held up well.

I think one coat is a bit optimistic myself.

The one thing I wish I had done is put on a proper base coat for ... not sure what you call it..."slightly knotty in places" wood is probably the best description.

Some of my knots have "bled" trough a tiny bit. Nothing tragic, but would have looked nicer without them annoying me.
