We have a smallish front room in our 1930's house. The fireplace is directly opposite the front window which is a tightish bay window. There isn't enough room to put a sofa in front of the window so I'm wondering where to put it! Room measures approximately 380 across (door to wall), 330 wide (from fireplace into centre of bay). Anyone have any inspirational ideas? I'm even thinking of ditching the idea of a sofa and having a couple of easy chairs and a snuggler. Room style is a modern take on the '30's ... Thanks

Well, it rather depends how many people you want to be able to sit in there. Our sitting room isn't so much bigger (different format), and we have very comfortable sitting space for 8 people, or comfortable lounging space for four.

The thing is, while placing a sofa is more tricky than chairs, you get a lot more seating for the footprint. If you can fit a sofa on the long wall opposite the door, you'll cover a lot of your seating in one go. Most modern sofas have a lot of arm, whereas mid-century vintage styles are more space efficient. Can you fit the snuggler in the bay window? Ok for two if necessary, but mostly used for one person slobbing. Add to that, one small but comfortable easy chair/lounge chair and/or a decent-sided footstool that can be used as an occasional seat, and you're all sorted.
