hi all
struggling with kitchen design and would be grateful for thoughts
we've chosen white gloss units and white granite tops with a dark wood floor
need to break up the white a bit but am not big into bold colours - could we have a chalky white on the walls or on backboard etc or would that look very odd with the white gloss?
grateful for advice!
thank you

I think you can have white matt walls with white gloss units, but I would make sure it is white, or a grey-ish off-white, rather than a yellowy or cream tone of off-white, else it might just look mucky.

I would agree that you would have to specifically match your white so it doesn't look dirty.
we have white and slate grey which is an alternative to bold colours.

Do you know I love the grey look but always chicken out - worry it will look a bit depressing - but when I see it on pictures I always think it looks lovely - is your slate grey quite pale?

the other thing I was thinking is a very pale brown - like a mocha or taupe type of thing? would that maybe look nice with a dark wood floor?

I do.

Warm unsalted butter (ish) walls. White tiles. White painted wooden ceiling. Painted IVAR cabinets with white. Fake ... paleish wood worktops.

But I did the whole kitchen for 300 euros so not exactly "House and Homes Inspirational".

I do love the cream walls with the white cabinets/tiles/beams though. Despite all the headshaking in the paint shop.

I've got an all white kitchen with chrome appliances (toaster, kettle, coffee pot, steamer etc etc. All big appliances are white)

I think it looks lovely.

My sister thinks it looks like i am about to perform surgery in there Grin

yeah I guess that's the thing with the all white - can look either very appealing or a bit clinical - depending on your perspective!

Yes, I think it's one of those things, you either love or hate.

I love it.

I love the clean feel of a white shiny kitchen and the way the chrome shines. Plus it's not a large room so the fact it's all white really opens it up.

Good point - ours is a small space too

What is the granite colour called? White granites actually have quite a bit of colour variation in them.

I agree that you ought to see the off-whites together, but i think if they look intentionally mismatched, a jumble of off-whites can look great. I think the trick is to throw in something very pale, but so completely off-white that it couldn't be mistaken. Stick to limited palette of tones: something a bit grey, something a bit stoney, something a bit pearl pink...

littlemonkey2013 · 23/07/2014 13:26

We have dark slate grey, both on the floor, one wall and a border. I love it. Pale grey or dusty pink would also look good

I definitely think you can have off white walls with shiny white kitchen but it almost needs to be enough off white that it doesn't look like you're trying to match it to the white units and gone wrong somehow. Alternatively what about a really pale fresh aqua colour (white with a hint of aqua really), this keeps a lovely fresh look and won't look like you've tried to match the white of your units.

rhubarbcrumbleplease · 23/07/2014 17:08

As burnished pointed out white granite rarely looks uniform white. the ones I've seen have streaks of cream, grey, beige or brown in them.
I don't think it would look too clinical.

Our cupboards are white gloss and we have frosted steel walls except one wall which is lime, my daughter persuaded me on the lime and it makes the whole kitchen look fresh.

My dm has gloss white cupboards, dark grey slate floor tiles, cream walls and stainless steel fixtures. She then added a touch of red with the toaster and bits. It looks amazing, really modern. She has a stainless steel splashback and extractor fan. It all looks pulled together and not at all mismatched. Go for it!

We have an open plan kitchen diner. We are going with a white matt handleless kitchen with a bamboo floor and a very pale grey quartz worktop I think.

But we have this wallpaper on one wall which really lifts it (in my biased view!)

can you have a white and cream kitchen or is that just weird?
