Fancy helping me transform my matchy matchy living room (on a budget)?

I hate my living room. It was decorated years ago and is very matchy matchy. I'd like to transform it without spending a fortune as we're planning to move in a couple of years and I need to focus on putting extra money away for that.

The house is fairly newish, so no interesting features in the room and there' s no fireplace. It's north facing and has a box bay window (which makes getting ready made curtains a pain as they're never wide enough). It doesn't get a huge amount of light in the day. I definitely need window dressings that offer privacy (without blocking all the light) too.

I've seen a dark grey sofa which I like and I have a couple of (matching of course) bookcases that I think I could sand and repaint. Flooring is a light laminate, which is in very good condition. Ideally I'd like to replace it, but I can live with it.

I don't know where to start after that though. What colour to paint the walls and bookcases. What kind of storage, tv cabinet etc (colour, materials etc) would work well.

I'll have a trawl through Pinterest later, but if anyone had any suggestions (particularly in relation to wall colour) or good links to ideas I'd be really grateful. I guess the reason that everything is so matchy matchy is because it's easy and I'm not so great at putting together my own look!

I don't have a fixed budget in mind, just really at the ideas gathering stage.

With a neutral floor and sofa you could have a really bold pattern for curtains and/or a rug. I'd have a look for those and then base your choices of wall colour around them, using Pinterest to create a mood board.

Would you consider posting a picture of how it is now, as it might help to see the potential?

I had a large leather arm chair with my three piece suit and I sold it on Gumtree and bought a lovely proper fabric armchair from TK Maxx! It's really stopped my room being too matchy matchy.
