Square hallway - lighting?

We are having our house rewired and will have a pendant or chandelier in the middle of the hall, which is square(ish).
How do I work out what size light fitting would look best? I'm worried if I buy something it will look too small.
Any ideas for something that will suit a 1950s house?

I too love chandeliers and the bigger the better would be my choice, but try and get a fitting that will go as flush to the ceiling as possible you may have to fit from the fllor boards above so check before you complete your decoration,I also go for a mirror in a hall again the bigger the better it creates a feeling of space and light.Ikea do a fab big sputnik style fitting which is very modern but it does look good up my DD has it in her lounge and her place is 1950ish
