Can I paint over wallpaper?

There is dark flowery paper on one wall in DDs bedroom which we want to decorate asap. It is in good condition but not a nice pattern. I really want to avoid stripping it as unsure of plaster condition and will need lining paper on anyway am guessing.

Question is can I just emulsion over? I am painting the room a pale colour so would have to put white on first as a kind of undercoat and maybe a couple of coats. Do you think it will cover it up? Anyone done this?

Yes of course. If it was crappy plaster underneath you'd line it with paper anyway.

If you're using posh paint I would undercoat it in cheap emulsion or indeed undercoat. Mine needed 3 coats to cover flowers.

Ooh good. Paper is pink and dark grey flowers!!!!! Pretty recently out on though. Am scared the pattern will show through but lots of undercoats in white emulsion might do it the .

Thanks.

Yes you can. Just make sure it is done in thinish coats of paint though, you don't want to totally soak the wallpaper and risk it coming off.

Oh yes definitely, we've painted over all sorts Grin

If the wallpaper will take it then Once emulsion might be a good idea as the undercoat?
