Blue and yellow kitchen, out of date??
RowanBerryJelly · 05/02/2014 15:04
Want to decorate our kitchen as it's a mess. Our house is 300 years old, poky odd shaped rooms and low ceilings...you get the picture!
Anyway, a really modern look wouldn't suit and I've always liked a fresh bright blue and yellow kitchen (I'm thinking duck egg-ish blue and a pale buttery yellow, not bright garish), is this really out of date?? Need to paint walls and cupboards and on a tight budget.
Also, any advice on websites for inspiration, need to decorate the rest of the house slowly as well.

For inspiration look at pinterest and houzz.com - you can search for blue and yellow kitchen for ideas. Good luck!

Personally, I would choose one (yellow or blue) and pair it with a neutral, like cream.
Both together might be overpowering.

Yes Houzz is good though it is American.
I agree that blue and yellow in a small kitchen might be a bit much together, you could perhaps have pale units then either yellow or blue walls and perhaps add an oil tablecloth or blind in both blue and yellow to get your colour hit?
In a small house it often works well to have fairly muted colours for walls and larger furniture or units then add bits of colour in fabrics/blinds/curtains/art/flowers etc.

You might find this website useful for ideas, there is a kitchen makeover with pics.

I don't personally like blue and yellow together, I think it's very stereotypically beach house and looks tired quite quickly (lemon looks a bit dirty).
But that's just a personal taste thing - I agree with the PP, have a search for similar colour schemes in period houses and see what draws you to it.
And if you ever plan to sell, keep the more divisive colour choices to things that can easily be changed (eg painted walls not cupboards). Like this.
