Knots showing through paint

We bought a wreck in the summer and have been working around room by room redecorating. One of the interior doors was painted quickly and badly by the previous owners. It was obviously raw wood before and the knots are showing through the paint. What can we do to make them disappear? Do we need to strip the wood, or treat it with something?

You can buy knotting paint from DIY stores. Paint that on the knots and then paint over the whole door with whatever paint you are using following the instructions on the knotting paint in terms of how long to wait and how many applications
