Making curtains (Manchester area)

We decided to get new curtains (as our old ones are totally mismatched to colour schemes and we don't even have them in some rooms)
They are so bloody expensive!! John lewis quoted nearly £1000 per set which is way beyond our budget.
I was thinking of getting them made privately as this might be cheaper so I wanted to ask if anyone had had this done, potential pitfalls etc. or even if anyone could be recommended in greater Manchester area (we're South Manchester)
I did put this on the local site but had no responses.

Do you have a Dunelm in your area? They do made to measure curtains that would maybe be cheaper than John Lewis if they have the sort of thing you are looking for. Their web site has a function where you can choose material, linings etc and then enter in the size of window and it gives you a price.
