We're moving into a house with a smallish lounge 13x12' which has a wooden floor and woodburner. How can I furnish it to soften the look and make it really cosy? I'm thinking really snug but am a bit rubbish at decor! Any ideas/pics welcome.

Pay attention to lighting, it will help to give it the most atmosphere IMO. Also cushions, warm wooden furniture.

Look on Pinterest for ideas.

Cushions, warm throws and soft lighting. No hard lines and shades of brown/cream all scream cosiness to me Smile
It's a bit naff to many, but I have fairy lights strung up round our room, just plain white ones, and they are cheerful and a little festive and make the room look happy Grin

Touches of warm colours in your cushions, mixed with cream and beige. A large cableknit throw over the arm of the sofa or an armchair. Rug on the floor. Seriously, the woodburner alone will do vast amounts, pile some logs either side of it. I am so jealous, I'd give up my firstborn for a fireplace.

Lighting and texture can make it cosy. Go for multiple light sources, especcilay some live table lamps with a lovely warm glow. And then mix up your textures with the soft furnishings, go for knitted and fluffy textures, maybe mixed up with some nice natural colours.

Also, a rug will cosy up the wooden floor for you.

The fireplace though will do the trick instantly.

The Danish have a concept of 'hygge', which is a kind of cosiness and togetherness. If you type this into Google images you might get some good ideas from that.

Yes to the above suggestions a nice rug, lovely big sofa, cushions, and side lighting :-)

Thanks Boffinmum - a great steer!

It always reminds me of when The female PM in Borgen has to meet the Other Woman and she rushes home to light candles and create superior hygge as a female dominance tactic! Grin

Oh I love Borgen's house, I can't be the only one to pause the tv to check it out, surely? Blush

BoffinMum · 14/10/2013 10:05

I love the whole Borgen thing full stop.

If I have an important thing at work, I have a special pale blue Borgen blouse I wear to give me inspiration!!

I've got to conduct interviews next week...I'm going to channel Borgen! Eep! [girlcrush]

BoffinMum · 16/10/2013 23:11

I channel her all the time.
We clearly need a larger number of role models Grin

A big basket from ikea stacked with logs will look nice beside the wood burner

Matildaandthematches · 23/10/2013 23:43

Ikea now does a grey sheepskin rug in grey which is lovely and a total bargain. Yes to cable knit throws too and I'd go for tweed and plaid cushions for a highlandy look that is cosy and will look great with the wood burner. Lots of rustic wood picture frames and maybe a wood framed mirror too?

sugar4eva · 19/12/2013 10:19

The room you describe sounds just like our s . We have logs by fire , orla keily type geometric curtains and then all other stuff is wood ,mirror above burner , throw sand fairy lights round the window which looks good with the burner flames. In summer when burner not in use I put fairy lights in it . Enjoy the room.. X !
