Please choose a sofa for me, am fed up looking!

There is too much choice. These are your parameters - £400 ish, as large as you can for the money, rest of décor is 'old' (Victorian house). DH wants a white leather James Bond effort (which is way over budget anyway). I have vetoed on many grounds and now we are stuck.

I'll ignore the second offering rootypig... The Karlstad looks really uncomfortable to me - I have a thing about the arms of sofas, those look really 'square' iyswim? Like you couldn't lean your head against them very well. Can you?!? Thank you though! (Realises that actually I may be very difficult to please... )

Second hand Chesterfield?

Go for a high quality brand but look at ebay for ex-display or lightly used ones. You can get Laura Ashley etc for a couple of £100s.

We've had a second hand Chesterfield Catmint but, again, I don't find them very snuggly... . They are beautiful though.
iheartdusty I like the Laura Ashley one but am not very used to dealing with ebay - if it says ex-display is that trustworthy? How do they get them? Sounds like a good deal.

That was my objection too but actually it is quite squishy. V comfortable. And long, if you get sofa size (not loveseat), long enough for a grown person to sleep on. Worth a trip to Ikea to test and buy twelve packs of cinnamon buns

We were actually at DFS at the weekend and saw 3 different families express an interest in above sofa during the 20 minutes we managed to stay there without having a marital breakdown about vast difference of opinion about said sofa so you may well find lots of mumsnetters now jump on this thread in sofas defence....

Ikea also do Ektorp sofa which is pleasantly squishy & reasonably priced with 10-15 different cover options. We're buying a two & three seater for our revamped lounge

We've just bought an Ektorp sofa for our Victorian playroom it works well and DS says it's comfy (& I'm not allowed to sit on it because it's all his!!)

This may be a silly question wonkylegs but did you have to put it together?! The only things I have ever bought from Ikea came in lots of different pieces.. Do sofas come in different parts too?!

We got ours delivered and it came in the most enormous box. You had to take it out of the box unfold the back (it's on a big hinge) put the arms on and the feet.
The covers come separately (I bought a cheap spare set) and you iron them & put them on. So yes you have to kinda put it together but it was ridiculously easy.
It also meant that I got to see the frame and believe me it's put together far better that the expensive shite one we bought years back from furniture village.
It's not as good as my hardwood framed Multiyork one but for an 8th of the price it's pretty good quality and amazing value.

Ooh, good to know, think we're going to get ours next weekend and we were wondering if it came 'flat pack' like all their other stuff! That doesn't sound too trying though
