Painting a child's table. Which paint to use.

I've got one of those small stripped wood Ikea kids tables and chairs for my son which is covered in felt tips and crayon marks. I am doing him a superheroes/Marvel themed bedroom and want to paint it white and then paint Captain America's shield on the top of the table (dh is pissing himself at my ideas, I have no idea why Sad).

Anyhow, I'm pretty arty but I'm not sure which paint to use. I don't want the Annie sloane type look. What I'm after is a solid look, obviously red white and blue will be the colours so quite bold. Would it be ok to use gloss or just use emulsion and then varnish?

Plastikote do little tins of enamel paint perfect for this - I painted a road layout & parking etc on DSs table
You can buy it and another make here in store at B&Q

I'd do the background in White gloss as the coloured pots are fairly small.
