what are the rules re which way rooms face?

people always say whether rooms are north or south facing when asking about colours (never east or west!?!?) and I understand this is to do with the light.

we are going to be decorating our whole house so coming up with colour schemes but I don't know how this is relevant to what I choose.

can someone explain?
thanks

South facing rooms will get the most sun compared with north facing rooms: artists like north facing rooms because the light is more indirect/ controlled.

East facing means the sun will light the room primarily in the morning: west is in the evening.

A north facing room will feel colder than a south.

But the impact is also dependent upon the room itself and how much light it gets.

OK this is good. what does it mean in relation to colours etc?

people say things like "it will be cold if you paint it blue " - in relation to which way it faces. is that right?

The only thing I know is that South facing rooms should have proper white paint and north facing should have cream, so I guess you carry thst cool/warm thing over to other colours.

So a north facing room will feel cold because it gets no direct sunlight - so the same blue colour can make two rooms feel very different.

The general thinking is warm tones for north facing/ south facing can cope with cool tones. East and west - depends on how you use the room.

OK thanks I'm getting there..

If you are unsure of which colours to go for - a simple option is to paint everywhere plain white - then add pops of colour with your furniture and accessories ! Can look very striking !! And very easy to change the feel of the room to suit the seasons - by simply changing the accessories ! :-)
