Help me dress my big picture windows please!

We moved last year and inherited the previous owners cheap (and dirty) aluminium blinds in ALL of the windows.........and we can't wait to get rid of them! They are the thin slatted kind, and it really hurts my eyes to look through them (though I should be wearing my glasses more often to be honest!) as I feel it's like looking through an optical illusion!

We have a double aspect living room, with windows to the front and rear of the house (it's about 22 foot long). The windows are 8ft long x 5ft high, and we have a nice open aspect to the front.

I feel that to buy new venetian blinds would be useless as they

  1. Hurt my eyes
  2. Gather dust
  3. Obscure the view

In our previous home we had vertical blinds (I know, I know!) but they were practical and allowed us complete privacy when closed, but an unobscured view when open.............but I'm reluctant to get them again as I just want something 'different'!

DH and I are thinking of nice roman blinds, but are a wee bit unsure for the following reasons:

  1. Cost!
  2. Whether they would obscure the view too much when open and 'up'
  3. What else to dress the windows with (see below)*
  4. If we could get away with just romans, but would that look to bare and underdone on such big windows?

*We bought two different sets of curtains last year (a teal blue and a red) so that we could change accessories and have different 'looks'. Obviously with the two windows in the lounge that meant FOUR pairs of curtains which was expensive. Would we manage to get a roman to match both different sets of curtains? (If we ditched the curtains altogether, I would feel that more than £200 had been wasted!)

I have a tendency to slightly REALLY overthink things so please feel free to knock some sense into me.........! Grin

If the paintwork is white then a simple white roll up blind will be a simple solution and would ok will with either colour scheme as neutral. You can buy them on line made to the correct width and height .

I agree, some plain or plainish roller blinds would work well with that kind of window if you already have curtains to go over the top. Roman blinds are nice but would obscure quite a lot of the top of the window I think.

Thanks for your replies....think that's decided it for us then! DH and I tend to discuss things for AAAGES before we make a decision! Grin
