Hate our new carpet

We have just had most of our house recarpeted and I hate it.

I'm not really a fan of carpet but thought it would be softer for a crawling baby and warmer in bedrooms.

Anyway, I HATE it. It's a golden beigy colour and far too warm in colour.

What would you do? See if it fades or pay out for a different one? i really struggle with interior design decisions and my house is now making me depressed.

What does your DP think? And how significant (to your family) was the expense of the carpet? E.g. new car/holiday/trip to a restaurant/didn't have to forego anything/saved for months? And how long are you planning on staying in this house?

Thanks for replying. DP likes it, it was fairly expensive, the same as a really nice holiday would be I guess. We had the money for it in savings but could afford to change it.

Planning on staying here a few years. So many things in this house depress me and I'm really annoyed at myself for making a mistake.

Is it really the house that is depressing you? New carpet isn't responsible for our mood and maybe you are focusing your bad feelings on something safe. If it is awful then you could compromise by changing it in the room you are in most but I wouldn't bother with bedrooms. The other thing is you could wait a year or two while baby / toddler mess and stains go everywhere and then change.

Thanks, that's a good idea to change it in just one room. I'll give it 6 months.

Good point about bad feelings on something safe... but I really do think it's the carpet!

One room change sounds like a good 'compromise' :-)

Rug next to your bed might help you 'get out of it on the right side' so to speak too :-)

Also consider changing your wall colour...maybe the colour of your walls is emphasising the warm tones of the carpet. Could make quite a difference if you get the colours that surround the carpet right, and it's cheaper to repaint or paper than change the carpet!

You could get a rug in the room you spend the most time in to hide some of it.

It's not silly, IMO. I believe environment can really affect mood. My mum became clinically depressed because she hated our house at the time so much. When we moved house, she got better.

I do think that the advice on here is good, though - change one room, and wait to change the rest for a couple of years until the toddler has drawn on it and thrown up on it and peed and pooed on it (ah the joys of potty training accidents). You would be more pissed off if a nice carpet that you really like got trashed than if this one does.

Agree re changing one room straight away. A cheaper option that only takes a weekend is to change the wall colour - it's probably clashing slightly and making the floor colour look icky. If you're not sure, try painting one wall white - it'll 'cool down' the overt warmth of the sandy tones. You'll be amazed, give it a try when the weather is warm, the paint will dry in no time, and it's a cheap experiment.

Once you've done that, try adding a rug in the room you spend the most time in. Don't feel disheartened by this, it's a learning experience and you can bank it as a good lesson for the future.
