Brick and plank makeshift shelves - is there a stylish alternative?

I need lots of low level bookshelves for different areas around the house,so to keep costs down I pondered on what I did in my student days with bricks and planks.
Is there a way which is just as cheap and easy but uses something other than bricks to hold the shelves up?

Pallet Shelves

Pallets are free. We get them from the local wood yard...look locally in builders merchants, factories and wood yards. Ask if you can have some.

Thanks Neo,whereas some of the shelves have the rustic touch that I think suits our house, they still involve sawing, hammering etc etc which is what I was trying to avoid.

You could stick a brick or two in the cans....to weight it down.
