We are going to redecorate and buy some new sofas. We will also re sand the parquet floor and add a new fireplace. I need some inspiration!

I like muted colours and was thinking maybe a pale grey. It is a square room with a big window and lots of light. All help and links much appreciated.

Which way does the room face?
What type of house do you have?
Period?
New?
What existing furniture are you keeping?
Are you keeping the curtains?

We need more info!

Ok, mm it's a 1960's semi, decent sized room. Keeping 2 oak cupboards that fit in the recesses by chimney breast and one oak coffee table. Need new curtains and it is a big window.

Definitely modern. Fireplace would prob need to be an electric fit against the wall type.

Any features you want to keep?

Also - which way does the room face? No good painting it grey if its north facing!

Champagnecharleyismyname · 11/06/2013 20:49

Sorry forgot that bit. It's south facing so lots of light coming in. I will keep the oak furniture but I am hoping for a complete new look. The furniture is modern.

If it's dark oak furniture/dark floor, best to have light colour on walls for contrast. Perhaps go for a feature wall. Most walls neutral, then one in darker/harmonising/contrast to add character. Neutral walls mean you can add colour via sofas, curtains etc, if you happen to be an accessorise person.

Oak furniture should add warmth to your room.

Thank you, I have been thinking a very soft grey on the walls with maybe a striped wall paper on the fireplace wall. Has anyone got any colour suggestions?

I was then thinking charcoal corner sofa and a large arm chair, think they are called snuggle chairs.

Also grey silk curtains and textured cushions.

We had a large south facing living room and had 'Cornforth White' (Farrow&Ball) on the walls, it looked fantastic. A very soft grey.

To test paint colours, paint A4 pieces of card/paper and then move them around the room on different days/different times of day to see how the colour looks in different light.

For curtains, I've used wallpaperdirect to buy fabric recently (then had them made to measure locally).

It sounds like you'll have a lot of grey going on, but that can work (type 'grey colour scheme living room' into the search on houzz.com for looks). Colours with grey - I quite like aubergine/heather, chartreuse, teal.

Thank you workingtitle. I just went through my thoughts with DH and he also said too much grey. My idea was to have different shades an then lots of textures with cushions on the sofa. I will use some soft white also.

I will get a tester of the paint, I have heard a few MNers say they love that colour.

I have seen a lovely corner sofa and large armchair in Next. I am not sure what their quality is like

DH hates the idea of striped wallpaper so I may have to rethink that one.

Lots of beautiful wallpaper about at the moment. I like scion and cole and son.
Also, do show your DH grey schemes on Houzz, might change his mind.

I'm doing similar at the moment :) extreme nesting here as I'm nearly 36 weeks and have decided the living room absolutely needs repainting, ceiling plastering, etc.
Anyway, we have oak coloured laminate flooring and simple modern oak furniture which we are keeping. Our massive, red leather corner sofa is going and we are getting a smaller, much simpler corner sofa in dark gray (steel). Walls will be very light grey, with grey linen curtains, coloured cushions, and a couple of nice, vivid posters. I'm getting a big, nice pendant light for above the dining table.
I'd love a mustard/ yellow rug but DP says no, so I'll get these colours in smaller accessories.

If you google image "grey living room" there is loads of inspirations.

Zoffany mist is a great all rounder paint grey tone and they do an unusual wallpaper called mosaic or fiamma which are very slightly textures (but def not old fashioned!) and come in some good shades. The plum is lovely for chimney breasts and then colour picked up in cushions etc. zoffany is quite expensive so depending your budget, the paint colour can be copied and do a little of good quality wallpaper for a feature Smile

All sounds fab, thank you for all the ideas. Duende, where are you getting your new sofa from?

Hi champagne, sorry, I haven't noticed you posted. We have ordered it from Dfs, just like the current one. I like it because it is a sofa bed and has storage for bedding. The only annoying part is having to wait for it 11 weeks :/

yellow/gold goes with grey
