Oh god, I'm boring myself but please help me choose a bathroom floor...

We have a odd kind of mismatching-eclectic bathroom planned. Old washstand painted bright pink, flower power wallpaper on two walls, green wall lights, general whimsy. (Do I sound like a twat?) We've come to the conclusion that really the tiles need to be white so that if we decide in two years that we want an oasis of calm after all we can adapt it. But the floor is a problem...

I don't want tiles (too cold). We have Karndean downstairs which is fab so it's either vinyl or laminate I think. There is a Karndean that looks like old white painted floorboards which I really like, but I'm worried about too much white. Or should it be a wood tone? Or (curveball) would I be mad to consider a black and white checked floor? I love them but could it be too much?

Opinions please before I drive myself mad!

OK I could work with that. Might try to get some samples of both. God I hate being indecisive!

Walnut would definitely be good with bright pink

IHeartKingThistle · 15/05/2013 12:24

I don't suppose anyone has any opinions on white tiles? Large, small, square, brick pattern, white grout, grey grout? Which would fit with this 'look' do you think?

I can't even choose white tiles

I saw a white worn/aged wood vinyl the other day- can't remember what make might have been rhinoflor or something like that- one of the better quality ones and it looked really realistic.
We always had tiles in our bathrooms because I was a tile snob but they were just too cold. Last 2 bathrooms we have done we have put in good quality vinyl. There was Amtico in our big bathrroom here and it's nice but it just looks like a quality vinyl.

Po they have a DAISY floor!!! One step too far I think!

Absolutely love that vinyl range LifeofPo! Now craving a pink cow hide floor....

Foxred10 · 15/05/2013 18:39

Also agree that vinyl is easier to live with than stone / tile. Have had vinyl, travertine, marble, ceramic tile in various houses and the vinyl was my favourite.

IHeartKingThistle · 16/05/2013 11:32

I think we have 3 votes for wood and 3 for black and white! This does not help me!

Option 1 - wood look vinyl (prob Karndean) with white brick tiles

Option 2 - black and white floor with white square tiles (large?)

Option 1 is infinitely safer given there are other 'feature' elements to the room. But.... Confused. I really have to choose this week!

I would really love this parquet but we had it priced up for the hallway and it was £££ more than the normal planks.

So this maybe?

But black and white and colour does work doesn't it?

Sigh...

That last link you just posted is gorgeous Thistle, I'd say who needs "safe" - if you went for the wood effect would you regret not getting the black and white? I know there are things in my house where I do regret going with the safer option, and wish I had been a bit bolder in my choices!

I'd choose black and white, it will look lovely and will go with any pattern and colour if/when you change the bathroom in years to come.

IHeartKingThistle · 16/05/2013 14:12

I do want the black and white I think, just worried the room would benefit from warming up. Our new(ish) kitchen is all white and colour, but with wood(ish) floor and worktop so it doesn't look cold.

Still can't figure out the white tiles either...

And... will the black and white be ok if there's not a massive amount of floor space? Quite a big bathroom but big bath, separate shower and washstand are going to take up quite a lot of floor space...

SvetlanaKirilenko · 16/05/2013 16:34

Now I think you are overthinking it Grin

Go with what you like - your bathroom is going to look "eclectic" so go with it and put in what you love most!

MrsLettuce · 16/05/2013 16:51

Yes, black and white checkered will be great, limited floorspace or no. Have a gander on google images.

Tile wise, what sort of look do you like? I'd be tempted to go with standard square white tiles with a border of plain black just below the top in a 1930's stylee.

MrsLettuce · 16/05/2013 17:01

Sorry, should have said: ...with a slim border...

IHeartKingThistle · 16/05/2013 18:29

Hadn't considered that, I'm not usually a fan of borders. Apart from in the shower the tiles are only going up to windowsill height, wallpaper above, so I suppose it might look odd if they just stop? Will google image...

MrsLettuce · 16/05/2013 18:40

Oh yes, in principle I dispise all borders of whatever type. The 30's black and white thing is the exception that proves the rule for me. This is a bit of a grim bathroom and the border is check rather than plain but it gives an idea. Srtange coving here and brick shaped tiles but also gives an idea, still not exactly what I meant. Must be googling all wonky.

IHeartKingThistle · 16/05/2013 18:46

Interesting...

this is more like it, and again

SvetlanaKirilenko · 16/05/2013 21:21

Oh that's nice MrsLettuce. Gawd I want to do up my bathroom now!

IHeartKingThistle · 16/05/2013 21:25

It's going to be a loooong process - turns out the bathroom wall might have to come down!

Thanks for sharing, and it's really nice. According to me, a black and white checked floor is an absolute classic. Angry in any way, the sound sperfect!

MushiMushi · 17/05/2013 08:35

I had a black and white checked bathroom floor in the last flat I lived in. I loved it, and loads of my friends remarked on how cool it looked.

IHeartKingThistle · 17/05/2013 12:30

Oh that's encouraging! Mushi was it tiles or vinyl? I want vinyl but I'm struggling to find one that's good quality.
