What colour carpet will work?

DH and I have decided that we would like to paint what will be the nursery grey. A nice soft warm grey colour on the walls, and we'll either have yellow, a soft blue or lilac curtains and accent bits and pieces. The carpet is destroyed and we've decided this is a good time to replace it.. but what colour?? Should we go for a plain silvery grey colour? Or something else entirely?
Any help of suggestions would be very much appreciated!
The cot/chest of drawers will be white.

Not self coloured for a kids room.

Grey sounds lovely (and neutral) but I'd maybe suggest a carpet with different shades through it - it will make it less obvious for marks.

I think neutrals are best, as then you can update the decor as you go along. I would go for plain pale dove grey or sand colour (mimicking the colour of wooden floorboards).

AS for the carpet type. Generally speaking you can get pure wool, wool mix or polyprolene (artificial fibres but cleans like a dream). We have polyprolene, at first I was hesitant as I'm usually a natural fibres sort of person, but having lived with a wool carpet, I was wary of wool for a child's room as it is hard to get marks out of AND it goes fuzzy if you've scrubbed it. Also, once you have used a carpet cleaning machine it gets dirty very quickly as some of the scotchguarding is lifted off.

However if you get a top quality polyprolene carpet, it feels just as soft as wool underfoot but it really doesn't mark.

Self coloured? Doris. Do you mean your children helped to decorate the carpet? oh dear!

Oh yes. DS decorated it (and wee'd on it too!) but I actually meant that having it all the one shade (no flecks of a slightly different shade to break it up) means that any bits of fluff/mess show up immediately; and with a toddler there are lots of these.
