Staining/varnishing a table

Hi all,
I've bought a second hand table (fiver!) and it needs a new surface. It's got a few marks where it's got wet. Does anyone know whether I need to use a sander and then varnish it, or is a dark wax polish any good?
Thanks! I've tried to upload a picture.

Hi stuffez!

We have a Sheeshan coffee table at home, hubby is awful at putting hot cups on it so ring marks galore! Pledge have a brilliant woodstaining polish. Just whack it on with a yellow duster and it looks brand new! I was amazed. It comes in two colours too dependant on the shade of your furniture, and available in the supermarket tooSmile

Oh that's really useful to know, thanks so much! It's quite a light wood but a nice staining polish might just do the trick!

There is a lighter one than the one I got so yeah you should be ok! Smells lush too:)
