Is this utterly naff?

shipping forecast I have a feeling it is, but I'm oddly drawn to it. I spent years sailing and must have written that forecast down a million times :o

I love it. I'm just reading a very funny book about the shipping forecast.

HeadFairy · 21/01/2013 22:19

really? There's such a thing? :o Gwan then, what's it called?

YDdraigGoch · 22/01/2013 14:26

Its called "Attention All Shipping" by Charlie Connelly.

The author decided to visit all of the shipping forecast areas, and he's written a book about his travels. I'm really enjoying it (we're just in Shannon).

jaynebxl · 22/01/2013 17:53

I love it. Big fan of the shipping forecast!

Sinkingfeeling · 23/01/2013 00:35

I have my eye on this

IHeartKingThistle · 23/01/2013 00:51

I don't sail, so if I had it it would be naff. But it means something to you so it can't be naff on your wall. Does that make sense?

Monty27 · 23/01/2013 00:58

I love the Shipping Forecast and would love it. If it weren't from NEXT :(

FrancesFarmer · 23/01/2013 00:58

Art from a chain store is naff, by default.

However, if you like it, buy it and enjoy it.

MildredH · 23/01/2013 01:51

I read this thread and thought the "artwork" from Next would be awful but opened the link and was pleasantly surprised.

As people above have said- if it has meaning for you it really isn't naff, and actually I think it's quite stylish. You'd never guess its from there. Looks quite "notonthehighstreet".

timidviper · 23/01/2013 01:57

I don;t think it is naff as it means something to you but do think that, for something mass-produced, it is overpriced but that is typical of Next.

Porkster · 23/01/2013 02:08

It's from next, so yes, quite naff. But I've seen much worse in there.

FellatioNels0n · 23/01/2013 05:36

I don't think the concept of the thing itself is naff, but the trouble with Next (and to be fair most high street places) is that they are always too slow to jump onto a well flogged horse. (mixing my metaphors a bit there Confused) and that whole vintage sign thing is a good few years old now, and only works well if you have been lucky enough to find some battered originals and have a very eclectic style generally.

I find love proper examples of vintage or 'shabby chic' but I think you need to be very careful with mass market reproductions iyswim.

ripsishere · 23/01/2013 05:43

I like it. Don't understand the 'it's would be OK if it wasn't Next' comments TBPH.
I'd like it but we aren't allowed to put pictures up in this flat, hence the lonely calendar hanging on our solitary nail.

Yamyoid · 23/01/2013 05:51

Prefer sinking's print. That's great.

jaynebxl · 23/01/2013 06:20

I'm with ripsishere on this. Something is either good or not. surely it can't become naff just because we find out where it came from? That suggests we are more bothered about buying from the "right" place than having our own taste or judgement. We should surely be able to pick and choose things from all over, using our own taste, rather than be sheep who can only consider something cool if it is from a cool shop?

QueenMaeve · 23/01/2013 21:44

Not naff at all! I'm sure some of the things on my walls might seem naff to others but so what, they are personal to our family. I think that looks fantastic, in fact that whole salvaged range from next is one I blogged about recently. It can take a long time to hunt around for salvaged pieces do why not just buy ready made stuff from the shops

QueenMaeve · 23/01/2013 21:46

( I spend every weekend in antique shops, salvage yards, vintage shops and go to auctions regularly, it's only once in a while that I actually pick up something worthwhile)

HeadFairy · 24/01/2013 09:11

Oooooh sorry I've been away from this thread... thanks for all the input. I'm sorry but my inherent snobbery said it's naff purely because it's from Next. I'll hold my hands up to that... And I do think it's also a bit 90s, something you'd see propped up in Central Perk... but it's because it's the shipping forecast I guess that made me smile. I would love to trawl antiques fairs etc to find something similar, but I don't think it's the sort of thing that would be produced in any similar manner in the days of yore. It's not like 70 years ago everyone was pinning the shipping forecast to their walls is it?

It is bloody over priced though!

I like that sinkingfeeling :)

OP posts:
pictish · 24/01/2013 09:14

Overpriced and mass produced imo.
But if you like it then buy it.

HeadFairy · 24/01/2013 09:14

YDdraig thanks for the book recommendation too, I'll look out for it :)

RatherBeOnThePiste · 24/01/2013 09:19

I love the shipping forecast, so does DH.

But... but... snobbery here isn't there?

Either you like or not?

NotADragonOfSoup · 24/01/2013 09:42

I like this one

The Next one is too big and too mass produced for my liking

I have seen tutorials on how to make this kind of thing yourself though.

RatherBeOnThePiste · 24/01/2013 09:45

Soupy, you could crochet one, no?

OmgATalkingOnion · 24/01/2013 09:52

Yes, yes agree 100% with that! I see this on the style and beauty threads all the time too, 'I like this but oh no, it's from BHS(or wherever that's not 'cool')..' I just don't think that way at allConfused

You like it? Then have it if it makes you smile!Smile

If I saw that in someones house I'd think it was quirky and interesting. I rather like it myself actually, since I live near the sea. I also have some 'Next' things in my house. I can't see what it matters where they came from.

NotADragonOfSoup · 24/01/2013 09:54

I can't crochet letters :o
