Tips for making a rented house a home?

It's all just so magnolia. Plus we dont have enough furniture to fill it due to moving from a tiny house to a nice a big one.

All the floors a nice laminate except for the dinning room which is a horrible dark brown and smells funny despite being vaxed 6 times!

The kitchen tiles are (I kid you not) turquiose and brick red, and there is no splash back behind the cooker so the wall always looks grubby. Is there something tempoary I could do to cover the horrible tiles and create a splash back? It would have to be water resistant.

I cant really afford much but we plan to be here for a quite a long time so I would like it to feel more homey.

Rugs, and large mats.

Would tile stickers work? I remember googling them at our previous house although we weren't there long enough in the end! Not sure how many you have to cover though- maybe just a few white in between to break it up a little?

We're lucky that we like the kitchen in our rented house, but elsewhere we have painted and put up pictures to make it feel like ours. Also curtains, rugs, floor lamps, cushions etc- all our things which make it our home.

Just to add that we are lucky being able to paint and hang pictures- I did live in one house where they wouldn't even allow picture hooks. Ridiculous.

For the splashback, what about this? You can rest it against the wall and take it with you when you go. Ours is currently serving as a table top protector, which is excellent, as it's heat resistant, as well.

I found nice velvet non studenty throws from TK Maxx, fairylights and those Joseph and Joseph funky worktop savers cheered me up. The occasional posh and treaty thing like a pink sheepskin rug or old candlestick. My boyfriend bought me a lamp shaped like a pigeon which made everything seem pleasing. I do emphasise with you!

I like that splash back but there is nothing to lean it on IYSWIM, there is no worktop there just literally the cooker in front of the wall. (It's a really crap kitchen!)

Not sure how strict our landlord is about painting and hanging pictures, I've never even met him but the letting agency are coming to do an inspection on tuesday so I will ask then.

I will look for some tile stickers too. They are big tiles and they are interspersed with white so maybe I could get enough stickers to cover the horrible colours and I've got a grout pen. Hopefully this will get it looking much brighter.

It's looking better now we've put the christmas decs up but thats not really a long term solution!

I meant just prop it between the hob and the wall, or is it a freestanding cooker?

If it's a freestanding cooker. maybe the ll would let you actually screw it onto the wall... You'd have to leave it, but that's less hassle than painting, and heat resistant, too.

Ikea do freestanding kitchen units though: maybe the catalogue/website will give yiu some more ideas on how to bridge the gap?
