Driving Europe - Netters favourite places

JoolsToo · 18/08/2005 21:19

We plan to spend time travelling around parts of Europe in about 2 years time and I'm asking all you lovely people for some of your favourite places to visit in: France, Italy, Germany, Austria, Switzerland and any other beautiful places you can think of.

For instance when we were in Chamonix this year we were advised to visit Yvoire on Lac Leman (Lake Geneva) and it was beautiful (I'd never heard of the place let alone think of visiting!) so any more hidden gems like this would be marvellous.

We want to avoid cities in the main. You have plenty of time to respond

TIA

I know it's a town but Lucerne (Switzerland) is beautiful and sooooo clean.

south bavaria's all gorgeous. There are around 35 freshwater lakes between Munich and the Alps, they are brilliant for swimming in because they are not stagnant, through flow of alpine spring water, incredibly clear.
Here's some info about sights round and about Mch.

( sorry, can't resist posting this link which I came across while looking for info about the lakes. Gives you some idea of how crazy life is here.)

Ramsau am Dachstien, Austria.

In France:
St jean-de-luz and small villages inland (Espelette, Sare, Ascain), Biarritz and Bayonne as well, all fabulously beautiful! not in the summer though, too crowded
Collonges la rouge (between Brive and the Dordogne)
Carcassonne and the Cathar ruins - breath taking (literally as you walk up!!!)
Uzerche (my village!) very beautiful medieval village, not very touristy, nice campsite by the river. Not far from Collonges La Rouge.
IN Spain: the north coast from San Sebastian down to Santander, and many villages on the way

In Germany, Heidelberg.
Austria, Innsbruck
If you go to Belgium, Bruges

If you go to Lake Garda you could also visit the Dolomites, most beautiful mountains, villages are Austrian in style even tho you are in Italy, fab Apple Strudel.

Definitely try to see lots of Lake Garda as scenery changes from north to south and if in Garda you should got to Verona, fab place, loved the Arena.

JoolsToo · 23/08/2005 13:35

Ah McRobb - have been to Lake Garda and Selva val Gardena (twice) magic! - will certainly be worth a revisit - thanks
