Just wondered if anyone knows of any spots similar to Padley Gorge in Derbyshire where its good to take kids for a paddle on a hot day?

Dovedale?

I've walked down Dovedale but it seems a bit big/deep for little ones. At least where I was it was. Thanks though.

If you come just over the border into Staffordshire there is Tittesworth Reservoir. Great playground, walks and a beach area that children can play on and splash in the water.

there's a lesser known but equally lovely spot underneath burbage - let me see if I can do you a link

Tissington Ford is lovely.

The DCs clap any car brave enough to drive through.

Women smile indulgently, men just growl.

not sure if this has worked if it has it should take you to google earth - you'll see an area of woodland shaped like the UK - there are streams inbetween england and scotland and inbetween england and wales. the other 2 spots I know are even lesser known local secrets - both near grindleford. from the church walk along the river towards hathersage and after 2 fields you can drop down to the river and there's a little island-like knoll (the water's not usually high enough to make it an island) and a lovely place to paddle. or head along the footpath that runs from grindleford to froggatt - half way through the woods there's a little pool. where I spent many a happy summer. you can also paddle in grindleford itself - just by the bridge - there's a nice playground too.

The link goes to google maps not google earth.

The paddling at Grindleford sounds good though, especially as Grindleford has a fab cafe! Or at least it did 12 years ago.......

Tissington Ford sounds nice as well. Hopefully the weather will be warm this weekend.

Thanks both of you.

yeah - the link wasn't quite what i had expected - you can see the uk-shaped woodland to the right - if you zoom in on that you can see the area I was talking about.it's a bit of a walk form the car park though. the cafe in grindleford is unchanged (assuming you mean the station cafe). the owner died a few years ago but his son took it on - it's about a mile from the bridge and the playground though.there used to be a smaller cafe in the village but that shut years ago. the village shop does sandwiches - but is in the process of being sold - and I think is already being wound down.another place for paddling is calver weir. we went swimming there a few weeks ago. oh and by the bridge in froggatt - bit muddy there perhaps but a nice picnic spot.

The flat bit near the stepping stones, near the car park, is perfect for paddling and really not deep at all.

I never knew there were stepping stones in Dovedale, have googled now and found a whole bit I've not been to. Thanks for all the ideas, have lots of places on the list of possible visits if the sun shines. Thanks.

Aah the famous station cafe at Grindleford! Worth going to see the plethora of notices telling you what is forbidden but I have to say the last time we went I had absolutely the nastiest cup of coffee I ever had in my life!

Madascheese · 13/07/2010 19:14

There is a great ford just outside Youlgreave but as it's a favourite spot for locals it can get busy.

Also check out the Manifold Valley as some really nice spots there

One of our favourite spots is off Cromford Meadows in the Derwent.

Oooo and tell us when you're going as littlemad loves a paddle!
