Beach holiday with 1 year old and a 63 year old

Hi,
We're looking to go for a beach holiday with our 16 month old DS. We're also taking my MIL with us (unfortunately, FIL doesn't want to come, so we have to entertain her ourselves ).

Naturally, our first priority is a nice place to go for young children - i.e. playgrounds, good soft sand on the beach to play in and warm seawater.

For my MIL, we need to be near a huge park or mountains/hills, so she can go for walks. I doubt she'll enjoy a 'regular' beach holiday, she needs to get out . This parkland/mountains do not necessarily need to be buggy-accessible, as if and when we'll join her on walks, DH will just carry DS in a sling/backpack.

I'd appreciate any destination suggestions!

btw, MIL is quite physically fit, so there's no restriction on hiking difficulty . There just needs to be ample space for her .

I was under the impression we had beaches here

France down by the pryrannes, or Northern Spain.

elk4baby · 24/06/2010 13:37

Yes we do , but there's a good chance, they'll be quite cool and maybe even rainy in September...

September is always great in this country well they have for the last few years. Freinds have done key camp I think in Biaritz, great accessibility for both mountains and beach

5Foot5 · 24/06/2010 13:42

Oh yes Biarritz is a lovely beach for children and there is great walking in the Basque region. Will your MIL have transport to get her to the starts of walks?

elk4baby · 24/06/2010 13:46

If it's easy to arrange, then yes she'll have transport. She doesn't speak much English, let alone French though , so it'd be best if we can arrange the transport, but don't have to escort her.

Corsica would be ideal.

nailonthehead · 24/06/2010 21:22

I agree orienteerer Corsica fits your criteria.
We went with my dd at age 3 and parents in their 60's.We went to Calvi.Great holiday.

orienteerer · 24/06/2010 21:38

This is a basic/clunky website on Corsica but very useful. The island has fabulous beaches and amazing mountains.

elk4baby · 25/06/2010 16:43

Thanks orienteerer and nailonthehead! I'll look into it.
Do we have to go the self-catering route? We're taking MIL on holiday to avoid inviting her over really , just so there's no power struggle in the kitchen...
