Easyjet mystery

Last year I flew for the first time with Easyjet.I took a small easily fits in the space above your head tiny pink suitcase. My friend took an enormous heavy case.Apart from the pink suitcase I had my handbag. When I got to check in I was charged for the pink suitcase,it was quite a lot and I was really upset, especially as my friend did not pay a single penny!!!I think I paid £32.I was upset because I took a miniscule amount of stuff, packing so light and feeling rather smug. When I got back home emails went back and forth between Easyjet and myself.I never got to the bottom of it.I do know I couldnt check in on line no matter how hard I tried. My daughter is just about to go to Italy and she is taking 20kg of luggage with her, which she doesnt expect to pay for.I did manage to have her boarding pass sorted out but is there anything else I did wrong last year for them to charge me £32 for a tiny pink suitcase? Why? Anybody any ideas? As for Easyjet,I just got standard replies one after the next and gave up,confused.

SImple ..You are permitted 1 item of hand luggage. If you had taken your handbag and put it in your case then thats it you would not have been charged . That is as long as the case conformed to the size /weight regulations for hand luggage.
Your friend probably pre booked for her case on line thus was not charged at check in .
When you go on Easyjet and book your ticket you are given options such as adding insurance, carbon ofset and of course luggage. If you prepay for your case then you will not be charged at the airport.
If you have NOT booked for a suitcase then yes you will be charged.
It is all pretty clear on the web......

I keep looking at her booking and it states my daughter can take upto 20kg in the hold but I still feel nervous! Fingers crossed it will be ok.Thanks Rosa. When I booked the flight this year I did see a little label saying check in and then I could print the boarding pass off.Last year it just would not let me.

Have a look here , look at the section headed "... with your flight", where it says "Add hold bags and/or extra weight to a booking"

you will need sign in details to continue...

I would phone Easyjet to get a definite answer if you're not sure what do to:
If you still wish to talk to someone*, our Customer Experience Team is available from 08:00 to 20:00 hrs Monday to Friday, and 09.00 to 17.00 hrs on Saturday and Sunday (Local time).

To all mumsnetters with any queries like mine, ring this number:

0871 244 2366

It is 10p a minute.Have your details ready.
My queries were answered speedily and expertly.
Yes I have already paid for upto 20kg online.
In addition to this she can take a piece of luggage to go above her head in the aircraft so long as it does not go above the dimensions.
I didnt ring this number beforehand because I had heard a rumour that you cant get through and you are charged about £1 a minute if you do.
Can I thank Rosa and KnickKnack for spurring me on and getting it sorted. Thanks very much

0870 6000000 - this is a cheaper number for Easyjet.

I'd double check that you've booked a hold bag for her if I were you and do it pronto if you haven't. It should say on your booking details. I try whenever possible to just take hand luggage, but yes it does mean I have to stuff my handbag into my clothes bag before going through security.

KnickKnack · 19/06/2010 16:01

glad you got sorted, hope she has a great holiday

(and sorry, I thought I'd included the phone number in my last post!!)

purplehat · 19/06/2010 16:03

It's about how much baggage you have-not the weight

You are only allowed on piece of hand baggage on board with you- this includes a handbag -any more and you have to pay

KnickKnack · 19/06/2010 16:19

Just out of curiosity, on your last flight why did you not pop your handbag into your case when they asked you to pay for extra baggage?

I think the strictness depends on who you get at check-in/security, and on whether the flight is fully booked or half empty, and probably lots of other reasons.

I've just flown with Easyjet and had hand luggage and a handbag, my mother had hand luggage and a handbag, and my little boy had hand luggage and a plastic bag...no one batted an eyelid! On the same flight/airport last year, a friend was queried because she had a newspaper in a plastic bag along with her hand luggage!

jardy · 24/06/2010 08:39

My daughter is there safe and sound and I dont think she was even aware of her mum panicking that she would need my debit card, she have to pay extra for luggage etc.She is enjoying herself so far,its a working holiday.
Knickknack you are correct I felt the lady was very unsympathetic and unflexible, although v polite.I dont fly and dont know the ropes.Had I been on my own and not with a travelling companion whom I didnt know very well I would have made more fuss. She herself said after that if she had thought beforehand I could have put my bag in her case.Anyway it was a lot to pay.I am still confused why I had to pay because I am sure my little pink suitcase went in the hold.I didnt check in beforehand because the computer would not allow me to.I tried and tried and then had to give up,is this why I ended up paying all that money just for a little handbag and tiny pink suitcase?
