Hi, I've posted a few messages asking for advice on where to take a toddler and baby in August. People have suggested Menorca.

Can anyone recommend the best area in Menorca for:

good beach for toddlers

nice 'charming' area, not too busy with a bit of local character (no fry ups), but not remote.

We dont want to hire a car and any recommendations of good self catering accomodation would be welcome.

Thank you!!!!

Loved Cala Galdana, although it's a fair few years since I was last there.

We stayed in Cala n Forcat a couple of years ago. We liked it but wouldn't go back, certainly not to that resort at least anyway. It is a nice little town, but the beach is down a very rocky track, no way could you get a buggy down there, and we found it to be quite expensive to eat, both in restaurants and buying food in - more expensive than England.

Sorry no advice as to where you should go, though I would steer clear of Forcat.

krisskross · 17/06/2010 12:53

Thank you both, good to know not to bother with forcat. Bucharest, can you remember if the beach is easy to get to at Galdana-or is it down a steep track.? we have a double buggy.

Most beaches on the southern coast are toddler friendly. The sea is very shallow, warm and the sand white and lovely.

We went there 2 summers ago, in August, and it is very busy. But the majority of people hit the beach after 11 o'clock. So, if you are an early bird you won't have problems.

Most beaches have a really good parking area, and you can rent an umbrella + ddeck chairs for the day.

I liked Cala Galdana and San Bou. We rented a villa with friends near Binisafua, which was lovely (though it very crowded)

I found the food in Menorca really uninspiring, to be honest

Thank you - are the villages at galdana or son bou nice?

Where would other people go on hols in Aug?

Two children under 3 appears to have left me unable to make a decision! I'm not really that sold on menorca, but cant really find anywhere else. Suggestions please!

son bou

I think the beach is amazing in Son Bou and huge, therefore less packed. But I remember there were big buildings there, so not ideal for me.

I have to say that I think Menorca has really lovely beaches, is well organized etc but I found there was just too many people! Menorca is probably perfect in June or September.

Francagoestohollywood · 17/06/2010 13:10

So many places you could visit! How do you cope with the heat?

Do you like "organized resorts" or would you prefer a small island? paxos could be a good compromise

krisskross · 17/06/2010 13:25

oooh no, we would find an organised resort a bit claustrophobic. A small island would be good, or samll beach with a big village or town. I'm guessing paxos would be too hot in Aug? We have to go in Aug unfortunately.

I have really strugulled to find anywhere not too hot, or not hot enough. I think somewhere like Brittany woul d be lovely just not warm enough to go in the sea.....?

Paxos isn't any hotter than Menorca, ime (and the sea is actually colder), plus it's always quite breezy in Greece.

Mind you, I'm Italian, so I might have a different perception of warm/cold weather (in fact Brittany as a beach holiday would be way too cold for me)

Francagoestohollywood · 17/06/2010 13:33

Tuscany, have you looked into Tuscany? Places like Punta Ala, or Castiglion della Pescaia? (haven't been there in nearly 30 yrs though!)

krisskross · 17/06/2010 13:42

maybe we will look at paxos,...amy partic area?
Blimey-decisions were much easier pre babies!

Lakka is a pretty village by the beach, particularly popular with the Brits, if I remember well!

Last time I visited paxos it was yrs ago, deffo pre children. Friends of mine went last year with their then 2 yr old child and are going back this year. But they are a bit like me, they are prone to drag their offspring on rocky beaches etc (evil emoticon )

krisskross · 17/06/2010 13:57

Thank you! will look into it...

Yes, have a look at it. I haven't visited for yrs, so I don't really know how expensive it is, etc etc etc.
It is a beautiful island, that I can say!

Francagoestohollywood · 17/06/2010 14:03

Maybe Paxos is a bit of a pita to reach? Menorca has direct flights from the UK, of this I'm certain.
