Is it possible for a family of 4 to stay in New York reasonably affordably?

I'm only trying to find out, no immediate plans. But, is it possible to rent a (niceish) apartment for short stays or would we have to stay in a hotel? Are there any decent websites that show more independent hotels/B&Bs (if they exist in NYC?).

Where's the best place to start looking to organise a trip?

Thanks

Craigslist. Not B&B's - holiday apartments to rent.

Hassled - many thanks. Not sure I understand the rates bit though - 1BR etc? Can you clarify?

1 bedroom, presumably...

Duh. Sorry, what I meant to type was is teh rate per night per person or per room or what?

No, I don't really understand the rates - I did find an apartment this way (was fab - views over the Hudson, clean and nice) but I can't remember the details. Some look like they might be per night, with others it's less clear.

Just email and ask - I emailed loads of random NY strangers, and they were all very helpful. One became obsessed with the fact I have the same unusual surname as a famous author, and seemed unable to accept we weren't related .

Oh excellent. Thank you.
