French toll roads question

I just got back from a little trip to France.

On one long pay-able section of road I lost my ticket. Much chaos ensued and police who were at next pay booth didn't want to help me

However, I found ticket caught up in my skirt.

Does anyone know what would happen on a French toll road if you really have totally lost your ticket? Are you stuck forever behind that barrier with french people getting irate behind you? Do you get arrested? What?

It must happen.

AFAIK you just have to pay the most expensive tariff/fee for the road as you cannot prove which junction you entered at.

Agree with Seaside. You'd have to pay for the whole stretch.

That would be ok I guess... it was a long stretch.

It was the moments of panic when I realised that nobody, but nobody was going to help me and I had a vision of being stuck behind that barrier forever
