Car seat rules in France?

Could anyone tell me if my tall, solid 7yr old DD (about 138cm tall last time I measured) needs a car seat in France? She usually uses a booster here, though I think she is just over the official minimum height limit for needing one. I've tried googling, but can't find what the minimum height/age/weight requirement is in France.

We're going to France by train in the summer and renting a car from the station. In the past I've had car hire companies try to charge huge amounts for rather basic and grotty child seats, if they actually have any at all. Do I need to book one for her? And if they don't have any in stock, do I need to go and buy one at the nearest hypermarket, or can we get by without? I don't want to have to take one with us on the train (well, several trains).

It SHOULD be same rule as UK as they are EU laws as far as I know.

A booster seat will be fine.

I'm sorry, I have no idea what the official rules are but I would say a 7 yr old would still need one, I think they are supposed to have them with a back on for ages but most people I know just use the bottom booster bit.

They are dead cheap in the supermarkets, you could definitely get away with driving to a supermarket to buy one once you've got the car (French not so hot on rules as UK).

Look here at Auchan

If the way my sister drives her kids is anything to go by, there are no car seat rules in France. She didn't even used to strap in her infant carrier!

Thanks very much for the links, buda and jamais. Sounds like she should have a booster, but if the car hire company tries to charge me more than about a euro a day for it, I'd do better going to a supermarket and getting one of the cheap ones.
