French camping on my own with the kids

This is something I would love to do. I'd love to have the confidence to pack up the car (or van if we get one) and drive down south, get the ferry to France and stay on a campsite near the coast down south. I'm sure other mums must have done this on their own but why am I so scared of doing this? What could go wrong?

Hi burgergirl! I tow my caravan down to the South of France on my own with my dd every summer. The obvious things can go wrong but I always take out Red Pennant insurance/get you home service, from the Caravan Club. If you do break down you just call them on your mobile and they take care of everything. Even flying you and dc home if necessary, someone else tows the caravan back. It really does take away alot of the worry about 'what if...'. It costs me about £130 for 31 days cover.
The first time I did it I was paranoid stuff would go wrong but actually nothing did! It was a great trip!
Good luck with it and I hope you go ahead.

I too have thought about doing this, but have my reservations! Lots of what ifs. Like say one of the children (i have 3) becomes ill and i am all that way trying to deal with it? what if the caravan tyre goes flat? etc etc etc. How much do you reckon on a months camping costs please? do you go to all singing sights or quiet (cheaper) ones. My only requirement would be a pool, not even a large one with slides!

My main reservation would be hours and hours of driving on my own with children.

What about a shorter journey to the coast S of Calais - lovely places near Le Touquet / Baie de Somme.

The camp site we go to is here and it costs about 40 euros a night. I know that's quite alot but the location, on the beach, is quite brilliant. Loads of our friends go year after year and the kids just take themselves off and we hardly see them!
If you get a flat tyre then just call up the Caravan Club Insurance( assuming you took it out) and they will get someone out to fix it.
If a dc becomes ill then I would stop for a day or two in a nearby campsite ( the caravan club have a fab book which lists 100's of sites all over France) until better to travel again.
I tend to do a few hours driving in the morning, stop for lunch and than another couple of hours before stopping at a site with a pool early afternoon.
We take about 3 nights in all.

wow love the look of that site blowbroth, but at nearly 60 euros a night for a family of 5 with ehu its out of our reach. thanks for the reassurance on break down etc tho.
