Dubai City??

Am looking at some winter sun destinations for later in this year and am thinking of dubai. The beach resort look quite expensive but there are a couple of hotels in the city that seem more reasonable.

Just wondered if anyones stayed in the city and how was it? Also which hotels would you recom?mend

we stayed at the hilton resort RAK (sorry can't remember how to spell it - ras al kimai or something - it's the next emerit along from dubai).

If it's just sun you're looking for then it's ideal - about an hour's drive from dubai city and it's all-inclusive which is a definite consideration as food/drinks/everything in dubai is extortionately expensive (we're talking upwards of £3.50 for a can of coke ).

here

Do you mean Ras Al Khaimer? (have brochure infront of me!) It does look lovely and is definately alot more affordable.

I see it's a bit out on it's own. Is it easy enough to do any any excursions from there? Don't want to do loads really mainly relax but would be nice to have option of doing a few things

yes that's the one.

You can get a trip into Dubai city from there plus I know there are trips on dune saffari's and to oman

It does look great. Did you book a package deal or is it eas enough to book hotel and flights seperately?

we booked package through virgin.

Do check though whether it would be cheaper to book separately as Hilton do do some early reservation discounts, I think dh did look into that though and that the cost of the flight made it more expensive to do it that way.

ConnorTraceptive · 10/05/2010 10:42

It's the virgin brochure I have actually! Did it include airport transfer?

yes.

ConnorTraceptive · 10/05/2010 10:53

Thanks wannabe I'd almost dismissed as being to far out but it does look so lovely!

we spent a few days at the Meridien in Fujairah over Easter when we were visiting dh

it was lovely and much cheaper than Dubai

there were trips like desert safaris, snorkelling and a free bus going into Dubai twice a week

mumoverseas · 10/05/2010 16:42

Rak and Fujairah do tend to be cheaper than Dubai.
Definitely go for a package as this will be much cheaper. We live in KSA and although it is only 1 1/4 hour flight it costs more for us to fly and get hotels than it would be to fly back to the UK and get a package deal. Madness

ConnorTraceptive · 11/05/2010 08:45

Thanks for the advice, think I'll stick to a package deal.

Stuoid question but do you need to have any jabs before you go?

I live in Dubai.

There are so may beautiful places in the world. Dubai is not one of them. It is not even cheap. I realise that everyone looks for different things from a holiday but I cannot think what on earth anyone would get from a holiday in Dubai - unless you plan never to leave your hotel complex, in which case you could still be somewhere more beautiful than Dubai.

It is a hot, dusty building site, cranes everywhere, nothing is grown here or produced so all your food will have been flown in, the exploitation of the workers is vile, the sea isn't particularly clean.

Thank you for your very honest post YunoYurbson - You've definately given me food for thought!
